Crop Rotation
Avoid growing vegetables from the same plant family in the same
place year after year. By rotating crops, you’ll reduce pest and
pathogen damage.
Here are plant families and common names of popular vegetables
in each family:
Amaryllidaceae: Chives, garlic, leek, onion
Chenopodiaceae: beet, chard, spinach
Cruciferae: broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower,
Chinese cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, radish,
rutabaga, turnips
Compositae: endive, globe artichoke, lettuce
Cucurbitaceae: cantaloupe, cucumber, pumpkin, summer squash,
winter squash, watermelon
Gramineae (Poaceae): corn
Leguminosae: green bean, fava bean, lima bean, snap bean, pea
Liliaceae: asparagus
Polygonaceae: rhubarb
Solanaceae: eggplant, pepper, potato, tomato
Umbelliferae: carrot, celery, Florence fennel, parsley, parsnip
